Rescue Techs are the initial providers of medical assistance during emergencies, offering urgent care and support to distressed individuals.
Acceptable Experience
and Training
Applicant must possess the following: High school diploma or GED; Tennessee drivers license; Current Tennessee medical certification of Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or higher; CPR card; Extrication certification.
Program History
In 2024, the Sullivan West Volunteer Fire Department marks its 50th anniversary of service. Among its achievements, the department takes great pride in its first response (Rescue Tech) service. Initiated in 1993 with an all-volunteer team, the program transitioned to include paid staff in 2016 to manage the increasing number of medical calls.

Additional Explanation of Duties
Responding to Emergency Calls: Rescue Techs quickly attend to patients in areas of the county where response times can reach up to 20 minutes.
Initial Assessment and Management: Rescue Techs conduct preliminary assessments and treat illnesses or injuries following the protocols and procedures of Sullivan County EMS.
Administering Pre-Hospital Emergency Care:
- Performing timely CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) to maximize patient survival chances
- Controlling bleeding
- Managing airways
Stabilizing Patients for Transport: Rescue Techs employ medical devices like defibrillators and oxygen delivery systems to prepare patients for transport.
Providing Extrication Services: They offer extrication for those in vehicle accidents and additional rescue services.
Effective Communication: Rescue Techs communicate patient and scene conditions, adjusting response levels to optimize ambulance availability.
Documentation: Rescue Techs record patient care in electronic patient care records and incident reports.
Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance: Rescue Techs are involved in the upkeep, restocking, and readiness of emergency vehicles and equipment.
Community Outreach: Rescue Techs sometime contribute to public health and safety by teaching CPR and first aid classes.
